Hiking near Sugar Mountain

Hiking near Sugar Mountain, North Carolina: public trails and parks, plus the checks still open.

Last updated October 15, 2026.

The village is a resort slope, not a trail town with a signed network of its own. The hikes people drive here for start at Grandfather Mountain State Park, Linville Falls, and the Parkway, about 8 miles off by the village's count. In winter, trade the overlook for a groomed run and don't count on the Parkway.

Grandfather Mountain State Park

Public trails on Grandfather Mountain, free to enter. The Profile Trail is 3.6 miles one way and strenuous. Calloway Peak is 5,964 feet. This is the hike, not the swinging-bridge entrance.

Mile High Swinging Bridge

A separate Grandfather Mountain attraction that charges admission and posts the current fee. Go for the bridge and the developed summit. The wind is part of the ticket.

Linville Falls

Parkway waterfall overlooks, one of the hikes the village itself points to. Several walk lengths leave from the same area. Pick the one that matches the group's patience, and check that the Parkway section is open.

Emerald Outback, on Beech Mountain

If the day is for a high trail instead of a ski run, the Emerald Outback is up on Beech, not on this slope. The Beech Mountain page has the trailhead. The road between the two towns is the steep part.
