Calendar

Events by month

A month-by-month view of the Brunswick beaches and the Blue Ridge towns. Dated events appear only when they're confirmed.

Last updated October 15, 2026.

This is the shape of the year, not a scraped listings feed. The only fully dated event in version 1 is the Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk. Everything else is the season. A blank festival square is intentional. The caterpillar has a weekend. Your parade does not, until somebody checks it.

Traditions we can name

Mile High Kite Festival, Beech Mountain

The Avery County Chamber promotes a free Mile High Kite Festival at the meadow by 402 Beech Mountain Parkway. Published dates have not agreed with each other, so check averycounty.com before you pack a kite. Bring a jacket anyway. Elevation does not care that the calendar says summer.

Woolly Worm Festival, Banner Elk

October 17 and 18, 2026, Historic Banner Elk School, 185 Azalea Circle. Hours: Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Caterpillar races pick a folklore winter forecast. The festival FAQ lists admission at $10 for adults, $5 for ages 6 to 12, and free for age 5 and under.

Fireworks, parades, and university game days live on the town and the university calendars. This page keeps the season, plus the one festival with a published weekend.

The year

January

Coast

Quiet. Many rental offices and snack shops are closed. The beach is still public on a fair day, and the wind has the place mostly to itself.

Mountains

Ski season, if the resorts have opened. Ice is the driving hazard, especially on the road up Beech Mountain. Parkway sections may be closed.

February

Coast

Still the quiet beach month. Mild days happen, and so do raw ones that find the gap in your jacket.

Mountains

Ski season continues when the resorts say so. Boone is a college town in session, which is its own kind of busy, separate from tourism.

March

Coast

Spring break can add a bump of traffic. The ocean is still cold enough to make you yelp. Seasonal businesses start to reopen on uneven schedules.

Mountains

Ski areas often run toward the middle or end of the month, and the closing day moves. Trails start to thaw and turn to mud.

April

Coast

Warmer air, cold water, thinner crowds than June. A good walking month, with room on the sand.

Mountains

Waterfalls are full. Lower slopes flower first. A frost is still possible up high. Beech does not do spring on Boone's schedule.

May

Coast

Memorial Day weekend is the start of the busy rental season for many houses. Bridges back up. Bring patience with the beach chairs.

Mountains

Trails are green and weekend parking at popular Parkway lots gets harder. Nights up high are still cool enough for a layer.

June

Coast

Summer. Hot, humid, stormy in the afternoon. Hurricane season has started. This is a beach month.

Mountains

Green ridges, warm days, cool nights, afternoon thunderstorms. The heat-escape month for the Piedmont.

July

Coast

The peak month. July 4 week is the crowded holiday on all four islands. The bridges feel it.

Mountains

Still the cool alternative to the coast. Thunderstorms most afternoons. Wildcat Lake is in its summer swim season when the college says it is open.

August

Coast

Still peak, still hot. The ocean is about as warm as it gets. So is the rental turnover.

Mountains

Still green. A few trees on the highest ridges can hint at fall late in the month. Color is not here yet in Boone or Blowing Rock.

September

Coast

Labor Day drops the crowds. The ocean often stays pleasant. Hurricane season continues. Some businesses cut hours.

Mountains

High ridges can start to turn late in the month. The valleys are usually still green. Parkway traffic builds on weekends.

October

Coast

Quieter islands, pleasant walking weather, fewer open counters. Hurricane season continues through the end of November.

Mountains

The leaf month for these four towns, with color usually earlier on Beech than in Boone. The Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk is October 17 and 18, 2026. Parkway lots fill on fair weekends.

November

Coast

Quiet. Hurricane season ends November 30. Many seasonal businesses are done for the year.

Mountains

Color is gone up high. Ski areas are waiting on cold. The Parkway can close when the first real ice arrives.

December

Coast

A quiet beach month. Holiday cottage traditions exist in these towns, and this guide has not verified this year's schedule.

Mountains

Holiday weeks are busy if the resorts are open. These weeks fill, and you should confirm the resort is actually operating before you treat it as a ski trip.
