Is Sugar Mountain Resort in Banner Elk?

No. The resort is in the Village of Sugar Mountain. Banner Elk is the next town down the hill. Many houses still get a Banner Elk mailing address because the neighbors share ZIP code 28604. The slope does not move when the envelope does.

When is ski season, and what does the mountain include?

The resort says opening and closing move with the weather. It tries to open by early or mid-November and stay open through the end of March. It publishes 20 slopes, 125 skiable acres, a 1,200-foot vertical, snowmaking on the slopes, tubing, and an outdoor ice rink. Check current rates and the day's hours.

How do I get there?

The village sits between Banner Elk and Grandfather Mountain, off N.C. 184 from the Banner Elk side. The village puts Boone at about 20 minutes and the Blue Ridge Parkway at about 8 miles. In snow it recommends four-wheel drive higher on the mountain, and says that is sometimes required. The Parkway is a poor winter plan.

Which county is Sugar Mountain in, and when did it incorporate?

Avery County. The village history dates the municipality to August 27, 1985, after the General Assembly passed a charter that June. The village estimates about 189 year-round residents.

Where should I hike?

Grandfather Mountain State Park, where the Profile Trail is 3.6 miles one way, or Linville Falls on the Parkway. The state park is free. The Mile High Swinging Bridge is a separate gate that charges admission. This village does not have a signed backcountry network of its own.
