Sugar Mountain is a village in Avery County, on the north slope between Banner Elk and Grandfather Mountain. The village says the ground runs from about 4,000 feet in the village to 5,300 at the summit, which is why it keeps two weather forecasts and why a jacket can be wrong by one driveway. Its own history dates the municipality to a referendum on August 27, 1985.

The ski resort is in the village, not in Banner Elk, even when the mailbox says Banner Elk. They share ZIP code 28604, and the village estimates about 189 year-round residents against 1,570 homes that fill on ski weekends and in summer. A quiet Tuesday and a Saturday in January are not the same headcount.

Banner Elk is the valley town at the bottom of the hill, with the walkable downtown and the Woolly Worm Festival. Beech Mountain is the higher summit on the other side of that valley. Grandfather Mountain and Linville Falls are the day trips. Boone is the supply town to the east. The village puts that drive at about 20 minutes.
