Jacket, not a second July
Winter on the Brunswick beaches
What winter is actually like on Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Holden Beach, and Oak Island, plus the one 2026 holiday flotilla with a posted schedule.
Last updated October 15, 2026.
Winter on these islands is a long walk in a jacket, not a second summer with a coupon. The sand is public. The ice-cream window often is not. Nobody is selling you a fake empty beach. July already left.
What the air usually does
The nearest long climate record is NOAA's Southport 5 N station, inland of Southport and the closest official normals to Oak Island. The 1991 to 2020 monthly normals put January at a daily high of 60.0 degrees and a daily low of 35.5. December is 62.9 and 38.0. February's normal high is 62.5 and the low is 37.6. About 15 January nights and about 12 December nights fall to 32 degrees or below.
Normal precipitation is 3.74 inches in December and 3.70 in January. Pack a rain layer. These figures are 30-year averages for that station, not a forecast for the week you booked, and not a reading off the Sunset Beach strand. Sunset Beach and Ocean Isle Beach sit farther west. The order of magnitude still holds: cool days, cold nights, rain in the mix.
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. A Thanksgiving week on a barrier island is still inside that window. Follow local emergency notices if a storm is named. A guidebook is not a weather radio.
The holiday event with a 2026 date
The Holden Beach Flotilla posts Saturday, November 28, 2026. Decorated boats leave at 5:30 p.m. from the Intracoastal Waterway west of Sailfish Park, travel past the bridge, turn near the Wharf, and come back to Holden Beach Marina. The organizer lists pre-flotilla time at the marina from 4:30 p.m. and an expected return around 7:30 p.m. Bring a new, unwrapped toy for Brunswick Family Assistance if you want the charitable half of the night. Watch from the waterway. The oceanfront will not show you the boats.
That schedule lives on the flotilla's own site. Treat the clock as posted, then check it again the week you go. Holden Beach is still one bridge and one road. A lighted boat does not add a lane.
The towns still waiting on a 2026 listing
Ocean Isle Beach, Sunset Beach, and Oak Island did not have a 2026 tree lighting, parade, or flotilla on the town pages checked for this guide. Older records exist. Oak Island's town gallery documents a Christmas by the Sea parade on December 2, 2023, and a tree lighting on December 1, 2023. Ocean Isle's public calendar still has a tree lighting page from November 25, 2017, which is a souvenir, not a plan. Sunset Beach's town site did not show a 2026 holiday flotilla or lighting in that check.
Those traditions can return. They are not a date until the town posts one. Look at oakislandnc.gov, oibgov.com, and sunsetbeachnc.gov closer to December. A rental blog with a confident clock is not the town.
What you actually gain by coming now
The summer dog bans lift. Ocean Isle bars dogs from the strand between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and that window is not winter. Holden keeps pets off the strand from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. between May 20 and September 10. Sunset's strand ban runs from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. A leash still applies when the dog is allowed. Oak Island's off-leash window is October 15 through March 15, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., on the posted public beach, under visual and voice control, and not in the surf. The town pages have the ordinances. A winter beach with a legal dog is the perk. A ticket for guessing the rule is not.
You also get the strand without July's bridge backup. Swimming is the cold-water choice, and this page has no ocean-temperature normal to pretend otherwise. Ocean Isle and Holden do not staff lifeguards. Oak Island's beach safety crew patrols in season. Inlets are not swimming beaches on a mild afternoon either.
Many seasonal shops and restaurants close. The pages for Ocean Isle, Holden, Sunset, and Oak Island do not quote a winter rate or promise a restaurant will be open. If the mountains are the other idea, the High Country holidays page has the dates that are actually posted.
Questions people actually ask
How cold is a Brunswick beach in winter?
At NOAA's Southport 5 N station, the 1991 to 2020 normals put January at a high of 60.0 degrees and a low of 35.5, and December at a high of 62.9 and a low of 38.0. January averages about 15 nights at or below freezing, and December about 12. Normal precipitation is 3.74 inches in December and 3.70 in January. That station is the long record nearest Oak Island, not a thermometer on the sand at Sunset Beach.
Which holiday event has a 2026 date?
The Holden Beach Flotilla posts Saturday, November 28, 2026. Boats leave about 5:30 p.m. from the Intracoastal Waterway west of Sailfish Park, pass under the Holden Beach bridge, and return to Holden Beach Marina. Ocean Isle Beach, Sunset Beach, and Oak Island did not have a 2026 tree lighting or flotilla on the town pages checked for this guide. Those towns have held holiday lightings and parades before. Check the town calendar.
Can dogs be on the beach in winter?
Yes, with the town's leash rules. Ocean Isle, Holden, and Sunset bar dogs from the strand in the middle of summer days, and that ban is not a winter rule. Oak Island allows off-leash dogs on the posted public beach from October 15 through March 15, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., under voice and sight control, and not in the surf. The town pages have the exact ordinance.
Is the water warm enough to swim?
The air normals are jacket weather, and a swim is a cold-water choice. This guide does not have an ocean-temperature normal to print. Ocean Isle Beach and Holden Beach do not staff lifeguards. Oak Island's beach safety patrol is a seasonal operation. Inlets are not swimming beaches.
Are the towns closed?
The beach is still public. A lot of seasonal counters are not. Hurricane season still runs through November 30, so a late-November trip is not automatically past storm season. Check the town and the house for what is actually open that week.
