Lights first, then the mountain

Christmas and New Year's in the NC High Country

Christmas and New Year's dates posted for 2026 in Blowing Rock, Boone, Banner Elk, Beech Mountain, and Sugar Mountain. Check anything without a date.

Last updated October 15, 2026.

The High Country does not do a quiet Christmas. It does a lit one, and a few of those nights already have a 2026 date on them. Anything without a date here is still a rumor with tinsel. Check the organizer before you promise a child a specific hour.

Blowing Rock

Blowing Rock starts with Christmas in the Park and the lighting of the town on Friday, November 27, 2026, in Memorial Park on Main Street. The town's holiday page says that Friday is always the one after Thanksgiving. The entertainment lineup posted under that date is last year's, and the page says it is likely to change. Go for the lighting. Don't build the afternoon around a quartet that might have the night off.

The Christmas parade is the next morning, Saturday, November 28, 2026, at 10 a.m. on Main Street. Main Street parking closes at midnight the night before and stays closed until the parade is done. A complimentary shuttle from the Shoppes on the Parkway lot to Main Street is posted for 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Visit NC lists the Friday lighting as free.

Chetola Resort's Festival of Lights is posted as free, from November 27, 2026 through January 31, 2027, switching on at dusk around Chetola Lake. A lake full of light bulbs is the other half of the village in December.

Tweetsie Railroad, at 300 Tweetsie Railroad Lane, runs Tweetsie Christmas on selected evenings: November 27 to 29, December 4 to 6, 11 to 13, 18 to 23, and 26 to 30, 2026. Hours are 5 to 9:30 p.m. The park is closed during the day those weeks, and closed on Thanksgiving Eve, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Eve. The railroad posts 2026 tickets at $65 for ages 13 and older, $45 for ages 3 to 12, and free for age 2 and under. Parking is free. Each ticket is a date and a train time, and it includes one open-air ride of about 20 minutes. Santa is there through December 23. The cars are not heated. A cute train and a cold nose can share a seat.

Boone

High Country Host lists Festive First Friday and the solar tree lighting for December 4, 2026, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Jones House in downtown Boone. The same page puts carriage rides, Santa, and carolers on the lawn.

The Town of Boone holiday parade is Saturday, December 12, 2026, at 6 p.m., heading east on King Street. The Jones House, which hosts the hot chocolate, says the drinks are free on the lawn before and during the parade, and that King Street closes at 6 p.m. between the Poplar Grove Connector and Hardin Street. The 105 bypass is the way around. Metered downtown parking is free after 3 p.m. that day. Come early. King Street does not grow extra curb on parade night.

The same host page lists choose-and-cut tree farms as open November 17 through December 23, 2026. The farm list lives on that page, not here.

Banner Elk

The Avery County chamber dates Small Town Christmas to December 4 to 6, 2026, and says the weekend is always the first one in December. Friday evening is the town tree and a holiday variety show by Ensemble Stage at Historic Banner Elk School, 185 Azalea Circle. Saturday is the long day: a 5K, breakfast with Santa, storytelling, ornament making, cookie decorating, an evening parade, then a mini-train through luminaries. Sunday brings an encore of the show and Christmas-themed tours at Apple Hill Alpaca Farm. The chamber does not print a clock for the parade on that page. Check it before you plant a folding chair at noon.

The Village of Sugar Mountain points its own holiday page at this weekend and puts the drive at about 2.5 miles. Banner Elk is the sidewalk. Sugar is the slope above it.

Beech Mountain

Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation lists a free Holiday Market and Parade of Wreaths on Saturday, November 28, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fred and Margie Pfohl Buckeye Recreation Center, 1330 Pine Ridge Road.

The town parade and Santa's Workshop are free on Tuesday, December 22, 2026, from 4 to 6 p.m. The posted route starts on Beech Mountain Parkway in front of Fred's General Store, loops behind Town Hall on Meadowview Road, and returns by Bark Park Way. The town names Town Hall, the visitor center, and Fred's as places to stand. After the parade, Santa stops at Town Hall, 403 Beech Mountain Parkway, until 6 p.m. This year's theme on the parks page is "All-American Christmas."

New Year's is at Beech Mountain Resort, 1007 Beech Mountain Parkway. The visitor center posts it from 7 p.m. on December 31, 2026, until 12:30 a.m. on January 1, 2027. Family Night at the lodge is free, with a DJ, games, and food and drink for sale. The brewing taproom party is ticketed and 18 and older. Fireworks at midnight are free and visible across the resort. The listing asks you to check back as the night gets closer. A midnight firework and a changed detail can both be true.

Sugar Mountain

SugarFest at Sugar Mountain Resort is Friday, December 11 through Sunday, December 13, 2026. The resort posts equipment demos on Saturday and Sunday, and fireworks on Saturday, December 12, at 5:45 p.m., presented by the Village of Sugar Mountain. Check the resort for the rest of the weekend's clock.

New Year's Eve is Thursday, December 31, 2026. The outdoor alpine torchlight parade starts at 11:45 p.m., and the fireworks go at midnight. The resort says no fee is required for that outdoor show. The indoor parties are ticketed, with reservations opening December 1. Check current rates. The village ski shuttle is posted through 1 a.m.

The other New Year, and the drive

Blowing Rock's holiday guide lists New Year's Eve fireworks at Appalachian Ski Mountain on December 31. The resort's own event page still describes ringing in 2026, which is last New Year, and a rates page mentions moonlight skating that night from 10 p.m. to midnight without a year. Treat Appalachian's 2026 New Year as unconfirmed. Check the mountain.

Skiing that week still depends on cold and snowmaking. The counts are on the ski season page, and a first lesson is sorted on the first-time skiing page. The Parkway is a poor plan between these towns in December. Sections close. The valley roads are the ones that know it is Christmas.

Don't plan on it. The Blue Ridge Parkway closes sections for ice and snow. Use the valley roads, and check National Park Service road status the day you drive.
