Sunset Beach ends in a mailbox. Ocean Isle Beach points at a pier. Both are low houses on Brunswick County barrier islands, with the Atlantic in front and the Intracoastal Waterway behind. Tubbs Inlet sits between them. You drive inland and over a second bridge. The sand does not do carpool.

What each one is known for

Sunset is the last developed Atlantic beach in North Carolina before South Carolina. A larger share of the town, and of the 4,175 people in the 2020 census, lives on the mainland. The walk people mean is the Kindred Spirit mailbox on Bird Island Coastal Reserve, about 1.4 miles southwest from the 40th Street access, 2.8 miles round trip, in sand. Mad Inlet closed after Hurricane Bonnie in 1999, so the reserve says you can walk the length of the island at all times. Stay on the beach and the marked paths. Nesting signs still win. The island pier is toward the west end of the developed strand. Brunswick County's visitor guide says the town does not staff lifeguards.

Ocean Isle is the next island east, about five miles from Tubbs Inlet to Shallotte Inlet. Incorporated in 1959. The 2020 census counted 867 residents. The Ocean Isle Beach Fishing Pier, at 1 W. First Street, is the landmark, and the pier's own site traces it to 1957. The town says it does not staff lifeguards. On-island shops huddle near the causeway. Shallotte is the grocery run. Holden Beach is the neighbor farther east, across Shallotte Inlet.

Beach access and parking

Sunset lists public walkways along the island, with handicap-accessible ramps at the Gazebo, 1st Street, 3rd Street, and 40th Street. Parking is prohibited on the numbered streets from 1st through 15th and from 27th through 40th, so the mailbox access is not a parking space. Designated town lots include the Gazebo lot, the Streetscape lot, and the west end of Main Street. Paid parking is enforced from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 1 through October 31, and the town says the other hours in those lots are free. The fee itself is on the town site. Check current rates. A summer 2027 trip should look again, because a fee schedule can move.

Ocean Isle tells you to use designated public access walkways and says the other paths are private property. Parking belongs in marked spaces. Paid parking by permit runs the same window, April 1 through October 31, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The town's page labels a rate table as 2025 even while it talks about 2026 permits, so this guide will not copy the dollars. Check current rates. No parking in those areas from midnight to 6 a.m. Dogs are barred from public accesses and public parking all year.

A family week

The mailbox is the long outing. It is 2.8 miles round trip on sand, with no services when you arrive. That is a lot of July for a small child. Bring water. The mailbox does not sell any. Dogs may come on a leash. The reserve prohibits off-leash pets. On the town strand, pets are off the beach from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the leash can be no longer than 10 feet.

Ocean Isle is the straighter beach week: about five miles of strand, a pier if it is open, and dinner often back toward the causeway or Shallotte. Dogs need a leash, and from Memorial Day through Labor Day they are off the strand from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Neither town staffs lifeguards. Inlets are for looking at. Hurricane season still runs June 1 through November 30, so a summer 2027 week is inside it.

How to choose

Choose Sunset if the mailbox, Bird Island, and a smaller cottage island are the point, and you are willing to park in a town lot and walk. Choose Ocean Isle if you want the pier as a landmark and a longer developed strand between two inlets. Choose Holden instead if you want the island that calls itself the Family Beach. This page does not quote a rental rate or take the reservation.

Questions people actually ask

Can I walk from Sunset Beach to Ocean Isle Beach?

No. Tubbs Inlet is between them, and ordinary vehicles are not allowed on either strand. Drive inland, then over the other bridge.

Where do I park for the Kindred Spirit mailbox?

The walk starts at the 40th Street beach access, about 1.4 miles one way. The town prohibits parking on 40th Street. Use a designated lot, including the west end of Main Street. Paid parking is enforced 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from April 1 through October 31. Check the current fee.

Do I need low tide for Bird Island?

No. Mad Inlet closed after Hurricane Bonnie in 1999. The North Carolina Coastal Reserve says you can walk the length of the island at all times. Obey nesting closures.

Which beach is easier with small children?

Ocean Isle is the simpler strand day: a public access, the pier if it is open, and about five miles of beach. The Bird Island mailbox is 2.8 miles round trip on sand with nothing to buy at the end. That is a long walk for a small child in July.

Are there lifeguards?

Ocean Isle Beach says it does not staff lifeguards. Brunswick County's visitor guide says Sunset Beach does not staff them either. Swim near a staffed stand only when one is actually staffed.
