One outing, then the beach or the porch
With kids

On the coast
A short strand walk, shells, and a pier if children will wear shoes and stay off the rails. One beach town is enough for a weekend. The lighthouse climb is ship ladders, not a spiral stair, and Visit North Carolina has published a minimum age of 9. It's not a stroller attraction. The grounds are the visit for younger children.
The Bird Island walk is about 2.8 miles round trip on sand, with no services at the mailbox. That's a long way for a small child in July. Bring water if you go. The mailbox does not sell ice cream.
In the mountains
Price Lake and the Cone carriage trails are the kinder walks. Wildcat Lake is the summer swim in Banner Elk, in season. Tweetsie Railroad, between Boone and Blowing Rock, is built for children. The swinging bridge is a height and weather decision, and it charges admission.
Ski areas run lesson programs in season. One lesson, not a four-mountain tour, is the right shape for a weekend. Tired kids and icy parking lots are a poor combination.
Build idle time. One outing a day, then a porch or a beach, beats a checklist. The porch is doing its job when nobody is in the car.
